State of Missouri vs. Louis J. Watts
Louis Watts was convicted of six felony offenses, including class D felony stealing of a vehicle. On appeal, Watts challenged only his felony stealing conviction, arguing that the State failed to present sufficient evidence that the stolen vehicle had a value of $750 or more, as required for a class D felony. The appellate court agreed, finding the evidence insufficient to establish the vehicle's value beyond mere speculation. Consequently, the court reversed the felony stealing conviction and remanded the case for entry of a conviction for class A misdemeanor stealing and resentencing, while Watts's other convictions remained in force.
