Supreme Court of Missouri / Feb 14, 2024
Clara Faatz, et al., Appellants, v. John Ashcroft, Missouri Secretary of State, Respondent.
Clara Faatz and William Caldwell challenged the Missouri Senate redistricting plan, alleging it violated constitutional requirements for equal population and community preservation by splitting Buchanan County and the City of Hazelwood. The circuit court found the map constitutional and ruled for the Secretary of State. The Missouri Supreme Court affirmed, holding that the circuit court correctly interpreted the constitutional priority of redistricting criteria and that Appellants failed to preserve certain claims. The Court also found the Judicial Commission was not a necessary party and discovery requests were properly quashed.
